What is Unexplained Infertility?

What is Unexplained Infertility?

An infertility diagnosis can be overwhelming for couples wanting to begin their parenthood journey. As we know, the human body is complex, and behind these complex conditions are many reasons or factors that not many are aware of. Thanks to the advancement in medical technology, there are many infertility treatments in India to treat different causes of infertility; however, a large percentage of diagnoses are categorized as unexplained. It might sound scary, but it is treatable.

Let us understand unexplained infertility in detail.

What is Unexplained Infertility?

Infertility specialists use the term unexplained infertility for diagnosis, where the root cause of infertility problems goes unidentified. They conduct several tests, and the outcome is determined only after the couple completes their fertility evaluation. The examination result in this case will often reveal:

  • Regular ovulation
  • Good ovarian reserve, i.e., egg count
  • No structural issues or uterine abnormalities
  • No fallopian tube blockage
  • Normal levels of reproductive hormones
  • The semen analysis - count, motility, and shape is normal

Even if the reports show no abnormalities, the unexplained infertility diagnosis is valid and given only to couples who have been trying to conceive for a minimum of six months (if 35 or older) or one year (under 35 years of age).

What are the Causes of Unexplained Infertility?

While the exact cause of unexplained infertility is not identified, experts believe some potential reasons can be:

  • Cervical Mucus: Cervical mucus present in the female’s body helps the sperm to travel to the egg. If it is thick or contains some ingredients, the sperm might not find its way to swim to the uterus.
  • Egg Quality: The number and quality of eggs can significantly contribute to unexplained infertility. Even though there is no definite diagnosis test to identify these, doctors will recommend some blood tests and ultrasound.
  • Endometriosis: Under this condition, endometrial tissues will grow in the uterus, which can affect a female’s reproductive organs. Even a moderate-stage endometriosis can lead to infertility.
  • Underlying Condition: Since the root cause in this case remains unidentified, there is a chance an underlying condition that goes undiagnosed affects fertility.
  • Sperm Quality: Sperm quality is equally important as egg quality for a successful conception. In case the sperm quality is poor, or there are issues with the count, shape, and size, it can contribute to the couple’s diagnosis of unexplained infertility.
  • Untimed Intercourse: Sexual intercourse that is not timed as per the ovulation window can lead to couples not conceiving. The timing and frequency of the intercourse play an important role, and those facing this problem can consult our specialists.
  • Uterine Lining: Endometrium is the uterus lining where an embryo sticks and grows through the pregnancy. In case the endometrium does not prepare itself or thicken to support the embryo, the implantation will fail, leading to unsuccessful conception.

How is Unexplained Infertility Diagnosed?

To diagnose unexplained infertility, our infertility specialists in India will:

  • Conduct a thorough physical examination of the couple
  • Recommend certain blood tests to check hormonal levels
  • Go through the sexual and medical history
  • Conduct ultrasound or advanced imaging tests to assess reproductive organs like fallopian tubes, uterus, and ovaries
  • Check the ovulation pattern
  • Do semen analysis and ovarian reserve testing

If the cause still goes unidentified after thorough check-ups, they will diagnose unexplained infertility.

What are the Available Treatment Options for Unexplained Infertility?

The treatment options suggested for unexplained infertility depend on the basis of the fertility examination results and treatments provided to couples with similar cases. The infertility specialist will often recommend treatments belonging to the following categories:

  • ART (Assisted Reproductive Technology)
